Skin Pigmentation
The Truth About Pigmentation
Ever wonder what the culprit is behind the brown spots on your face?
There are a variety of causes for pigmentation. The most common being sun exposure. These can show up on our skin as sun-spots years after the summer vacation you spent sun-tanning and frolicking by the beach. Another common cause of pigmentation is hormonal change in women of all ages. This can come about with the use of oral contraceptive pills and pregnancy. Middle aged women are not spared as well as pigmentation can also come about with menopause. This usually shows up as larger patches on our skin and is commonly called melasma or melanin pigments.
Pigmentation can also be a result of overzealous facial treatments and creams. It is important to know that people with darker skin types, such as ethnic South Asians or Latin Americans, may have increased pigmentation from the use of certain creams, aggressive acid peels or even deep laser treatments used in skin care treatments before.
Laser Therapy For Pigmentation
The common mistake that many women make is to assume that there is one treatment for all types of Pigmentation. As with any other type of skin condition or ailment, different forms of pigmentation will respond to different skin care treatments. Freckles, sun spots and mild post acne marks may be effectively cleared up with a few treatments of Intense Pulsed Light (IPLs) or pigment lasers. Deeper brown patches such as those caused by melasma usually do well with the newer lasers such as the Fraxel laser or the revolutionary Mixto laser.
